EPSFA - 2018 Summer Slam Pro / Open Division – 2nd Place Day #2 / 3rd Place two day Overall (8/11/18 & 8/12/18):
Team Outcast consisting of myself, Ron, Curtis and Oren fished the Erie PA Sport Fishing Association – Summer Slam Tournament in the Pro / Open Division. This is a two day tournament in which teams weigh their largest 12 fish each day with a combination of Walleye & Steelhead. Standings are calculated for each day and in a cumulative over-all score for both days.
During this season it has been very difficult to locate big fish with the majority of our catches being in the younger years classes. I pre-fished Thursday and Friday covering a lot of water in search of bigger fish. On Friday we found a couple promising spots that produced larger Walleye plus some bonus Steelhead.
Day #1: We set out Saturday to where we had finished up on Friday. At the 6:am start we had a constant bite which kept us from keeping the majority of our gear in the water. Although we were constantly boating Walleye, these were smaller fish that weren’t going to help us at the scale. At 10:am, still boating plenty of Walleye, with little to no upgrades, we made the decision to pick up and run. It is always tough to lose time with your gear out of the water while the clock is ticking but we knew we needed some kickers in the box if we were going to have a chance at finishing well.
We set up on another spot, that on Friday, showed some promise. We dropped the probe and it was bath water top to bottom. With time ticking we were on the verge of panic mode. We turned east and started to see cold water as we ventured deeper. Finding another bite we managed some upgrades and one mid-range fish.
At the weigh-in our 12 fish boxed tipped the scales at 35.8 #s, with our big fish weighing 6.75 #s; landing us in the 6th Place spot for Day #1.
Day #2: We made the decision to go back to where we started on Day #1. We had caught some bigger fish there on Friday and with good temps and bait still in that area we didn’t think Friday’s fish would leave that area.
With the 6:am start, the first rod down got crushed by a mid-range sized Steelhead. Once again we managed a steady Walleye bite. With a better ratio from the prior day and the upgrades started to come. As mid-morning approached the fish kept improving, with better and better upgrades. We added a couple kickers to the box and were starting to think we might have a decent box. At the buzzer we had another nice Steelhead crush a rigger, bust the surface and gone, Ouch!
We headed to the Day #2 weigh-in feeling confident that we should be in the mix for the Day #2 totals. At the weigh-in our 12 fish boxed tipped the scales at 52.8 #s, with our big fish weighing 9.80 #s; landing us in the 2nd Place spot for Day #2 and 3rd Place for the two day overall.

E.P.S.F.A. - 2018 Walleye Challenge - 2nd Place Finish (6/23/18): Team Outcast consisting of myself, Curtis and Oren fished the Erie PA Sport Fishing Association – Walleye Challenge tournament in which competing teams weighed their nine largest fish of the day. On Thursday and Friday a gusty NE wind pushed cold water near shore turning the spots that we had been previously fishing to ice water. That, along with the fact that we hadn’t been catching many tournament quality fish, left us scratching our heads tournament morning on where to fish. We opted to head offshore in search of some warmer water temps. As we left port and headed offshore our suspicions were correct and the water temps began to rise. After finding some good temps and in a place that looked promising, we deployed the setup at the 6:30am start. Things started slow but quickly got hot and we had a non-stop bite throughout most of the tournament. We sorted through a lot of fish to put together what we though was a decent box. We headed to weigh-ins and our 9 fish box tipped the scales at 43.80#s which was enough to secure us a 2nd place finish out of the field of 22 teams.
E.P.S.F.A. - 2017 Summer Slam I - 10th Place Finish (6/24/17): We pre-fished throughout the week and found some really nice fish including a couple in the 10# range. We headed back to that area on tournament morning and it was game on. We had a steady bite all day despite the building waves. Although we had plenty of action, our big fish from earlier in the week were no where to be found. We pulled rods a bit early to saw through the waves for the long ride back to the marina. We headed to weigh-ins and weighed a 41.3#, 6 fish box, with our biggest fish of the day going 7.9#. We managed to slide into the 10th spot of the 30 boat field and cashed a check. A fun day on the water with the Outcast Tournament Team of Ron, Brian and Chris.
E.P.S.F.A - 2016 Summer Slam II – 8th Place Finish (7/16/16): Team Outcast (Capt. Jason, Capt. Ron and Chris) fished the Erie PA Sportfishing Association – Summer Slam II - Walleye tournament. With no pre-fishing in the previous two days due to nasty weather with high winds/waves the game plan turned toward seeking out some colder water and fishing any temperature breaks that we could find. We set out, did some searching a located a screen loaded with bait (smelt). At 6:30 am, start time, we deployed our deep program. It was game on from the first line in. At 7:25 we boxed our 6 fish weigh in limit and shifted gears to up-grade mode, tweaking the program and location. We managed steady upgrades but just couldn’t find the big one that we were looking for. We finished the day boating approx. 25 Walleye, with the biggest weighing in at 8.55 lbs. Our total weight for our 6 fish limit was 41.3 lbs, which was good enough to secure us an 8th place finish in the money.
E.P.S.F.A - 2015 Fall Trout Challenge - 1st Place Finish (10/11/15): Team Outcast (Capt. Jason, Capt. Ron, Chris and Brian) fished the Erie PA Sportfishing Association – Fall Trout Challenge. We left the dock at 6:am sharp heading west in the darkness to fish the spots that were productive earlier in the week. We rounded the point only to get hit by the building chop coming from the W/NW. With the weather report indicating that things were only going to get worse we made a team decision to go to plan B waters sheltered by Presque Isle. As the lines went in at the 7:am start it was an immediate double. The fishing was ferocious and we managed to box the weigh in minimum of 6 by 8:30 and it was upgrade mode from there. It was a steady bite until we headed for weigh-ins at 2:30. We finished the day going 23 for 31 on Steelhead, with our 6 biggest Steelhead tipping the scales at 37#s 9 oz, landing us in the top spot.
E.P.S.F.A. – 2014 Fall Trout Challenge – 5th Place Finish (10/19/14): Team Outcast consisted of the regulars First Mate Ron and Chris with guest Don. High winds and waves made the west unfishable so we headed to plan B waters. With the fishing being tough we settled into grind mode. We finished 5 for 7 on Steelhead, boxing 1 short of the 6 fish limit. Off to weigh ins with a tough field of competitors. When it was said and done only 2 teams, of the 11 team field, managed to box the 6 fish limit. Only 3 other teams were able to managed a 5 fish box. With the weights tallied Outcast posted a 5th place finish, under very tough conditions and a great field of competitors.
2014 E.P.S.F.A. Summer Slam – 9th Place Finish (8/2/14 & 8/3/14): Team Outcast fished the two day event in the Pro-division. Competitors weigh their 12 largest fish each day which could consist of Walleye, Steelhead or Brown Trout. Day 1: After some searching we managed to go 22 for 25 on Walleyes. Team Outcast’s 12 biggest Walleyes weighed a total of 79.85 #s for Day 1.; Day 2: On Sunday, Team Outcast’s 12 biggest Walleyes weighed 79.15 #s. Team Outcast took honors for the biggest fish caught on day 2. A total weight of 159 #s secured Team Outcast a top 10 finish landing in 9th place and taking honors for the biggest fish caught on Day 2.
E.P.S.F.A - 2014 Spring Trout Challenge - 3rd Place Finish (4/19/14): Team Outcast secured a 3rd place finish, out of a field of 15 teams, competing in the Erie PA Sport Fishing Association - Spring Trout Challenge held Saturday April 19, 2014. This tournament is a Steelhead / Brown Trout tournament in which teams can weigh a maximum of 6 fish with total points per fish and total weight added up on the leader board. An ice covered main lake kept all of the the teams fishing Presque Isle Bay. After a slow start and several fish not hooking up, Team Outcast was able to boat their 6 fish limit which included 5 Steelhead and a 6.6# Brown Trout.
2013 Great Lakes Tackle Summer Invitational - 12th Place Finish (08/24/13 & 08/25/13): Fished the Great Lakes Tackle - Summer Invitational Tournament. This was a two day, no cull tournament in which you could weigh a maximum of fifteen fish a day. No cull, meaning that the first 15 legal fish over the back of the boat had to be kept.
We managed to land a 12th place finish with a 2 day total of 165.69 lbs of walleye weighed. For full tournament results: 2013 Great Lakes Tackle - Summer Invitational Results
