During this season it has been very difficult to locate big fish with the majority of our catches being in the younger years classes. I pre-fished Thursday and Friday covering a lot of water in search of bigger fish. On Friday we found a couple promising spots that produced larger Walleye plus some bonus Steelhead.
Day #1: We set out Saturday to where we had finished up on Friday. At the 6:am start we had a constant bite which kept us from keeping the majority of our gear in the water. Although we were constantly boating Walleye, these were smaller fish that weren’t going to help us at the scale. At 10:am, still boating plenty of Walleye, with little to no upgrades, we made the decision to pick up and run. It is always tough to lose time with your gear out of the water while the clock is ticking but we knew we needed some kickers in the box if we were going to have a chance at finishing well.
We set up on another spot, that on Friday, showed some promise. We dropped the probe and it was bath water top to bottom. With time ticking we were on the verge of panic mode. We turned east and started to see cold water as we ventured deeper. Finding another bite we managed some upgrades and one mid-range fish.
At the weigh-in our 12 fish boxed tipped the scales at 35.8 #s, with our big fish weighing 6.75 #s; landing us in the 6th Place spot for Day #1.
Day #2: We made the decision to go back to where we started on Day #1. We had caught some bigger fish there on Friday and with good temps and bait still in that area we didn’t think Friday’s fish would leave that area.
With the 6:am start, the first rod down got crushed by a mid-range sized Steelhead. Once again we managed a steady Walleye bite. With a better ratio from the prior day and the upgrades started to come. As mid-morning approached the fish kept improving, with better and better upgrades. We added a couple kickers to the box and were starting to think we might have a decent box. At the buzzer we had another nice Steelhead crush a rigger, bust the surface and gone, Ouch!
We headed to the Day #2 weigh-in feeling confident that we should be in the mix for the Day #2 totals. At the weigh-in our 12 fish boxed tipped the scales at 52.8 #s, with our big fish weighing 9.80 #s; landing us in the 2nd Place spot for Day #2 and 3rd Place for the two day overall.
